SOME WALKS IN AND AROUND HASLEMERE

I got to know these walks through exercising our dog, but no reason why they should not be dogless. After all, the scenery is the same.

These walks are between 1½ and 2 hours long. With the judicious use of the map (Explorer 133) they can be lengthened or shortened.

A word of caution about finding or losing your way. In general, West Sussex paths are very well signposted, so if the map says there is a footpath to the right, there always is, even if you think it should have happened earlier. When I use the abbreviation FP in the text it could mean either a Foot or Bridle path.

There is not much roadwork, but inevitably roads have to be crossed, and sometimes followed to reach the next footpath. As it happens, our dog is reasonably well trained, and obedient, so she can handle roads, but I always take a lead, in case we suddenly come upon a field full of sheep. Better to be safe than shot!

All these walks can of course be done the other way round. If you consider that there are four seasons, then each walk actually results in 8 walks and they can all appear to be different.

My friend Jeremy insists that I recommend carrying a compass, and I think he is right. Remember that there are 5 points on the compass – North, South, East, West and where you are!

I would also suggest a walking stick. Apart from needing to prop yourself up, it does help in beating off belligerent undergrowth – nettles can be over friendly.

Regrettably, most of the time a car is necessary to get to the start, but the driving involved is usually less than 15 minutes from Haslemere.
